Web Access Initiative

The World Wide Web Consortium (the governing body for the standards the Internet is built on) launched the Web Access Initiative (WAI) a set of guidelines on how to make web pages that are universally accessible. By following the guidelines designers can create pages whose essential information can be read on any web browsing device.

This has two important ramifications for organisations with a web presence. Firstly, that users with any device: older versions of web browsers, PDAs, internet ready mobile phones - in fact any device with access to the internet - will be able to get the core of the information from your website even if their device is not capable of interpreting all of the formatting and visual elements on the page. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, those with disabilities who use assistive technologies to use the functionality of web pages will be able to do so with the minimum of complications.

From October 2004 the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 was extended to websites and the law now mandates that websites must be accessible to those with disabilities just as physical premises should be. The Internet is often a lifeline to tens of thousands of people with visual, motor neural, learning or other disabilities and yet a surprisingly large proportion of web sites exclude these users solely through inadequate design.

By building web sites that conform to the WAI, organisations can communicate to all the visitors to their site and project a more professional image to affected users. eSlice specialise in making your pages WAI conformant and accessible.
